Oakley Football Club was founded in 1967 by the Chelsea FC footballer, Peter Houseman, who had then recently moved to Oakley.

Peter played for Chelsea in their "Golden Years" of the late 1960's and early 1970's. He was a member of the F.A. Cup winning squad of 1970 and the European Cup Winners Cup squad of 1971.

Oakley FC blossomed under his leadership and in 1969 he helped found the "Basingstoke & District Boys Sunday League" and was their first League Secretary.

However he had to step down from this post due to F.A. rules and so was duly elected the first League President with his wife Sally succeeding him as League Secretary.

Despite growing career & family pressures (they had three young children by this time) both Peter and Sally continued as the leading lights of Oakley FC until their untimely death in March 1977 when they were both killed, along with friends, in a tragic car accident. They left behind their three young children.

In memorial to Peter, the League which he helped form was renamed the "Peter Houseman Youth League" and the playing fields at Oakley were also renamed "The Peter Houseman Recreation Grounds"
